In our study of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons we looked at evidence from the 8th and 9th centuries. The children quickly found out that the written sources were from books handwritten by Christian Monks. In these manuscripts the holymen wrote in a calligraphic style and the first letter of each first word at the start of a Chapter was ornately decorated. These are known as illuminated letters where the letter itself may be surrounded by pictures of animals or objects that begin with that letter. Often the letters are richly finished with gold and surrounded by foliage and greenery. We designed and created our own.
