Year 6

Welcome To Year 6

English

In writing, we use picture books as a stimulus for our work. We work in three week blocks: we read, we plan, we write.

In reading, we use a variety of texts. We listen to a good model of reading, we practise our reading fluency and prosody, we develop our vocabulary and our understanding.

Reading for pleasure - we read a different novel each half term.

Handwriting - by year 6, we have learnt to form joined handwriting but we continue to practise and begin to develop our own style.

Spelling - we practise and learn common words that we often misspell eg with, which, they're, their, there, of, off etc, along with learning new spelling patterns and the statutory words for year 5/6.

Mathematics

We use the Power Maths (White Rose) scheme of work, which covers the whole maths curriculum. After each unit, we complete an end of unit assessment. We continue to practise our multiplication tables daily along with daily fluency work. Friday is always Fluency Friday, where we develop our arithmetic skills.

P.E takes place on a Wednesday and a Friday.

All children need to have a plain white t-shirt, plain black shorts or leggings. For cold weather, children may wear plain black tracksuit bottoms. Children also need black pumps for indoor P.E and trainers for outdoor P.E.

History

Over the course of Year 6, the children will learn about The Industrial Revolution and Victorian inventions and Britain at War.

Geography

In geography the children will learn about volcanoes and earthquakes and will then go onto study North America.

Science

In science, Year 6 will study:

  • The human body (the heart and blood flow)
  • Light
  • Electricity
  • Classification
  • Evolution
